More Open Water Success for Otago Athletes

Our Otago athletes have been making their mark in more open water swimming events in January, with notable results at the Australian Open Water Swimming Championships, the Wanaka Ruby Island Swim, and Wellington leg of the Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series. Congratulations to all those that competed in these events!

Over in Australia, Neptune Swim Club's Ruby Heath posted great results at the Australian Open Water Swimming Championships! Ruby raced in two events, placing 19th in the 5km and 21st in the 10km. After a long trip to Busselton, Western Australia, Ruby battled it out against a stacked field over both races - and even had some company in the form of dolphins swimming not too far away from the field! How epic is that! We are super proud of Ruby and her achievements in Australia this week - here's to continuing to build in 2023!

Congratulations are also in order for all those in our Swimming Otago community that competed at the Ruby Island Swim in Wanaka yesterday! More than 40 of our members, including swimmers, coaches, technical officials, and other volunteers, raced at this event - what a great turn out! It sounds like it was a fantastic event put on by the team behind the Ruby Island Swim... A huge congratulations to everyone who competed - for many of our members it was their first time racing in open water, and you have each done us so proud!

Meanwhile in Wellington, Neptune Swim Club's Eligh Ashby competed in the Banana Boat Ocean Swim Series - Swim the Lighthouse. Racing the 3.3km distance Eligh placed first overall, finishing a huge two minutes ahead of the next closest competitor! Awesome work, Eligh!
