Top 8 Finish for Twist at Junior Pan Pacific Championships

Kiwi ASC athlete Kale Twist recently represented New Zealand at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Hawai'i from 24-27 August 2022. Part of a 23 strong team of Kiwis from across the country, Kale was one of just three athletes selected from the South Island - a huge accomplishment in itself. Taking on two individual events plus a relay, Kale contested the 50m and 100m Freestyle, in addition to the Male 4x100m Freestyle Relay - coming home with a load of impressive results and the experience of a lifetime.

Up first was the 100m Freestyle, where Kale posted a great time in the heats - 52.29 - just 0.09 seconds over his personal best time, to take 30th place.

On the next day, Kale joined forces with fellow Kiwis Ollie Lutton, Gus Shivnan, and Finn Harland to take on the 4x100m Freestyle Relay. The team did a stellar job, knocking almost two seconds off their entry time to place 5th overall. Each of the guys posted awesome splits, right on or under the personal best times which is a huge testament to all the hard work these athletes have put in to get to this level. Kale posted an impressive split of 51.95 on his leg of the relay, more than 0.3 seconds faster than what he recorded in the individual 100m on the previous day.

The final day of the championships saw Kale take on his favoured event - the 50m Freestyle. Kale posted a fantastic heats swim of 23.69 to secure a spot in the championship final. This would be his first international final (in an individual event) - how good!

Riding on the high of making it into the final, Kale gave it his all against some of the best youth swimmers the pan pacific countries have to offer. It was a close finishing final, with just 0.17 separating 5th and 8th, but Kale just missed out at the wall, being out touched at the finish to take 8th place. It was an amazing swim nonetheless with Kale posting a new personal best time of 23.47, breaking the Otago 18 Years and Open Records! What more could you ask for!?

We are so insanely proud of everything Kale has achieved this week at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships. It is amazing to just be selected and have the experience of representing your country at a major international junior competition - but it is on another level to make a final and post a personal best time. We couldn't be more pleased with Kale's results, and look forward to seeing how he continues to progress as an athlete moving forward.
